The Seraphs beat Dunellen 49-35 on Saturday, scoring the most points since they hung 49 on St. Peter’s (New Brunswick) in 1972, according to head coach Steve Sciarappa. When the school that you last did that against doesn’t even exist any more, you know it’s been a long time. Lopez, Mitchell, White, Palmer, Miles and Lewis all found the end zone in the program’s first win ever over Dunellen. It also marked a school record for combined points in a game, according to Sciarappa. The Seraphs scored 125 points all of last season and now have 121 through three games.
MIDDLETOWN — Mater Dei Prep’s Seraphs ran their record to 3-0 at the expense of Dunellen on Saturday.
They dashed past the Destroyers, 49-35, in non-conference action.
The Seraphs are 3-0 for the first time since 1986 when they sped to a 4-0 start.
“I believe we’re getting respect,” Mater Dei junior quarterback Christian Palmer said after shredding the Destroyers for 145 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. “We’re finally getting some respect around here.”
The Seraphs received plenty of respect from Dunellen coach Dave DeNapoli after turning Monsignor Robert T. Bulman Stadium into a speedway. A few minutes after the game, DeNapoli turned to the Seraphs and said, “Nice job guys,” as they headed to their gathering.
“Hey,” DeNapoli said, “they’re fast. They’re athletic. They beat us on the edge. They had a nice game plan. They did nice things.”
To hear fourth-year Mater Dei coach Steven Sciarappa tell it, the Seraphs’ seniors have done plenty of nice things.
“Our seniors have been with us for four years,” he said, “and they understand the program well. When they joined our program, we told them, ‘We will run this like it’s a college program.’ They have done a great job of leading our young guys. One-third of our players are freshmen. Our seniors do a great job of bringing their lunch pails to practice.”

LADY SERAPHS DEFEAT WALL IN OPENING ROUND OF SHORE CONFERENCE
The Lady Seraph Softball Team have turned some heads these past two weeks. With a record of 22 - 2 and big wins over Group 3 & 4 schools (Jackson Liberty, Red Bank Regional, Marlboro, Freehold Township), the girls are beginning to get noticed. They may have put the icing on the cake this Monday when they defeated Wall in the opening round of the Shore Conference Tournament, 2-1. The Lady Knights were seeded #2 in the tournament and have been in the top 3 of the Shore Conference Rankings all season. The Lady Seraphs came into the tournament seeded #15, undefeated in the "B" Central Division, winners of the Monmouth County Tournament White Division and not given much "love" by other coaches and sports writers in the area. Well, hopefully all that has changed. The girls continue their adventure when they play host to St. Rose on May 29th in the State Tournament and travel to either Middletown North or Howell in the next round of the SCT. Come out and see what all the noise is about.
